Peter Byrne, the voice behind one of the '80s' most recognizable synth-pop hooks, has died at 74. The Naked Eyes singer died this week in Los Angeles after a brief illness, reports Variety. The group's biggest hit came in the early 1980s with "Aways Something There to Remind Me," which Billboard describes as a "synth-pop interpretation" of a tune written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It rose to No. 8 in the US on the Hot 100 chart, the group's only top-10 hit.
The same debut album also had lesser hits "Promises, Promises" and "(What) In the Name of Love." Born in North London and active in the Bath music scene, Byrne played in several bands, including Neon with musicians who would go on to form Tears for Fears, before launching Naked Eyes with Rob Fisher in 1982. Byrne kept touring and recording after Fisher's 1999 death.
