Felon Charged in 'Senseless' Killing of Teen Driver
Willie Herndon   (Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis)

A teenager's planned trip to the zoo ended in her being fatally shot on a St. Louis highway, and prosecutors say a Texas couple is to blame. Authorities in Missouri have charged 42-year-old Willie Herndon of Arlington with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of 17-year-old high school student Alyssa Wilson, who was driving to the St. Louis Zoo's "Boo at the Zoo" event when she was shot on Interstate 170 on Oct. 14, per NBC News. Herndon's 45-year-old wife, Taiya, is charged with hindering prosecution after prosecutors say she drove her husband, a known felon, to an Illinois hotel, where the pair were arrested and found to have allegedly swapped license plates, KABC reports.

Investigators say security video showed a white Buick Enclave stopped on the shoulder of I-170, a person stepping out, a single gunshot, then the vehicle pulling away. Alyssa was struck by a bullet that entered through the back of her car, crashed into a concrete median, and later died at a hospital. Investigators cite no known link between the couple and the teen. Two months from turning 18, Alyssa was "excited about her future," including what was to be her family's first vacation to Disney, her father said at a press conference, describing a "senseless" killing. The couple remains held in Illinois. In Missouri, bail is set at $1 million for the husband and $500,000 for his wife as investigators probe the couple's possible involvement in another shooting on Interstate 55 on Oct. 11, reports KTVI.
