An Ohio jury has convicted a father of murder in the death of a sheriff's deputy he hit with his car just hours after watching police video of his son being fatally shot by a Cincinnati police officer. Rodney Hinton Jr. was found guilty Friday in the 2025 crash that killed Hamilton County Special Deputy Larry Henderson; sentencing is set for Nov. 16, WLWT reports. The 40-year-old was found guilty of murder, reckless homicide, and felonious assault but not guilty of the most serious charge against him, aggravated murder. He had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
On May 2, 2025, police showed Hinton body camera footage of 18-year-old Ryan Hinton being shot the previous day as he ran from officers responding to a stolen-car call, NBC News reports. At trial, Hinton's attorney argued he was legally insane, citing his mental health history. He has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Prosecutors did not dispute that he is mentally ill, but they argued that he knew right from wrong at the time he killed Henderson.
A defense attorney argued that Hinton had planned to kill himself by driving into a utility pole, the Enquirer reports. Prosecutors countered that Hinton intentionally steered toward Henderson as the officer stepped out of the way. Henderson, 57, had retired from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office months earlier, but he was working as a special deputy, directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati during graduation ceremonies.
