A late-night Halloween-themed bike ride in Southern California turned deadly Saturday when an impaired driver slammed into a group of cyclists, killing two and injuring two others, police say. About 30 riders were heading east through Montclair around 10:40pm when a westbound Honda Accord hit several of them at an intersection, according to the Montclair Police Department. The driver then took off, reportedly dragging one victim for more than a mile, per KTLA.
A male witness told KNBC he was able to follow the driver, parts of whose vehicle were left in the street. Investigators say they tracked down 38-year-old Valentin Alberto Rodriguez at his nearby home some four hours after the crash, per the San Francisco Chronicle. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI, felony hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. A 25-year-old man died at the scene, a 30-year-old woman died at a hospital, another rider suffered major injuries, and a fourth suffered a minor head injury. Authorities have not yet released the victims' names.
