Terry Rozier just saw a big chunk of his pay vanish. An arbitrator has ruled the free agent guard must give up most of his $26.6 million salary for the 2025–26 season, finding that his legal restrictions kept him from fulfilling his contract with the Miami Heat. Rozier missed the entire season after his arrest last year. Under pretrial release conditions, Rozier, who has pleaded not guilty in a federal sports betting case, was barred from contacting anyone with the Heat or Charlotte Hornets, NBC News reports. The court's conditions also include travel restrictions. Prosecutors say Rozier, one of several people charged in the case, took a bribe in 2023 to exit a Hornets game early. The Hornets traded him to the Heat in 2024.
The ruling comes after an earlier decision required Miami to pay his full salary for this season, even after the NBA put him on unpaid leave following his indictment. The ban on contacting the Heat was lifted after the team released him in April. Rozier's lawyer is now asking a judge to ease the no-contact order for Hornets personnel, arguing in a court filing Wednesday that being unable to play for or against Charlotte could effectively end his chances of landing another NBA deal, the Athletic reports. The attorney called the conditions "unfairly punitive," writing: "With forced inactivity, Mr. Rozier is facing a potential second season of non-participation despite being entitled to a presumption of innocence."
