Tracy Morgan is catching heat for a crack about teachers that many viewers say went too far. During a Variety and CNN Actors on Actors sit-down with current Saturday Night Live cast member Marcello Hernandez, the conversation turned to getting in trouble at school for being the class clown. Morgan framed that as a gift teachers didn't recognize—then took it several steps further. After Hernandez joked he now gets paid for his "mischief," Morgan replied, "And they still making minimum wage," and later added, "I can't stand teachers … they have a ceiling … that's all they ever gonna be."
The comments drew a spit take from Hernandez and criticism from educators and others online once Variety posted the clip, per USA Today. One teacher questioned why the video remained up as educators work hard to get students across the graduation stage; another user said this was the first time they'd been "offended" by Morgan, while crediting teachers for nurturing students' talents. A third user called out an "upside-down" system where "celebrities rake in millions" while "the people who actually matter—like teachers—struggle to make ends meet." While Hernandez laughed along with the comments, he did say teachers aren't paid enough.
