No One Nominated Her for an Emmy, So She Did It Herself

Brittany Allen didn't wait for HBO to get behind her Emmy chances—she did it herself, and it worked. The 40-year-old thespian scored a nomination for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her turn as terminally ill young mom Roxie Hamler on HBO's hospital drama The Pitt, one of 25 nods the show landed, reports CNN. Allen learned last month that the network wouldn't be submitting her performance and responded by paying the $225 entry fee and filing the needed paperwork on her own, then quietly campaigning on social media.

"This industry really doesn't do you any favors," Allen tells CNN, explaining that she felt compelled to advocate for her work, which included extensive research on death and spirituality and more than two months on set. HBO content chief Casey Bloys called the network's submission choices strategic, citing the show's huge ensemble, and said he was pleased by her nomination.

Self-submissions aren't terribly rare—Game of Thrones alums Gwendoline Christie, Alfie Allen, and Carice van Houten did the same in 2019—and Allen wasn't the only Pitt actor who received a nod this year: Co-star Jeff Kober also "pulled off [a] coup" with his self-submission and snagged a guest actor nomination for his turn as Duke Ekins, per the AP.
