Lena Dunham just added a new title to her resume: mom. The Girls creator and husband Luis Felber have welcomed their first child, a daughter born via surrogate, Dunham revealed in a Vogue op-ed. Dunham and Felber, both 40, married in September 2021. The writer and actor has long been candid about her complicated path to parenthood, including a hysterectomy she underwent in 2018 because of severe endometriosis pain, which she's described as both a loss and a relief, People reports.
Dunham has spoken about grieving the end of her ability to carry a pregnancy while also becoming more open to different ways of creating a family. Last year, she said she and Felber were in the process of "expanding" their family "in new ways" and that she hoped to "safely meet" their children.
- In the Vogue piece, Dunham writes about getting to know the surrogate and preparing for the baby's arrival. "In the months before the embryo transfer date, as I got to know our surrogate and to trust her, the feelings I thought would be there somehow weren't: namely jealousy, that this woman could do for a child—for my child—what I could not. Carry her safely in her body, use her form to feed and house her, regulate the baby's ever-evolving nervous system with steadiness, heart, and breath," she writes. "Instead, I felt a different kind of jealousy—toward said baby, for the chance to be tucked into someone who radiated such safety. I could just tell she knew how to steer an SUV in the snow."
