A large slice of the US is about to sweat through a sharp shift from springlike to midsummer heat. Forecasters say roughly 150 million people will see temperatures in the 90s or above through early next week, reports the Washington Post, with about 12 million of them facing triple digits. The first surge hits the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic: After starting the week with highs of 58 in Boston and 71 in New York, cities from Washington, DC, to New York City are expected to push into the upper 80s and 90s Thursday through Saturday, potentially tying or breaking daily records at Dulles International Airport, Baltimore, Poughkeepsie, and JFK International Airport.

A cold front should briefly temper things along the East Coast early next week, but models point to a stronger, broader heat wave after that, possibly tied to a developing heat dome stretching from the Plains to the Atlantic. Parts of the Intermountain West and Plains will see intense heat first, worsened by drought and scant mountain snow, and the hot, humid air is expected to fire up strong thunderstorms in the central US. Nighttime heat is also notable: Brownsville, Texas, and Key West, Florida, are flirting with record-warm lows. The pattern follows the planet's second-warmest May on record and growing odds of a record-hot year. The US isn't alone in the roasting pan: The BBC takes a look at the hottest place in India, where "mornings and nights no longer exist."
