A woman with links to the cultlike Zizians group has been charged in a Pennsylvania cold case. Prosecutors on Wednesday charged 33-year-old Michelle Zajko with orchestrating the Dec. 31, 2022 shooting deaths of her parents, Richard and Rita, in their home in the affluent Philadelphia suburb of Chester Heights on the morning of her 30th birthday, NBC News reports. Investigators say she plotted the killings shortly after her mother texted her in an apparent attempt to reconcile. Authorities allege Zajko did not act alone, citing surveillance footage that shows a second, still-unidentified person entering the house before the couple was shot.

The couple's bodies were found in Zajko's childhood playroom, surrounded by her old dolls, the AP reports. Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said the case rests on years of accumulated evidence, including text messages, ballistics work, and enhanced audio in which someone can be heard shouting "Mom!" near the time of the murders.

  • "At this time we do not know who her co-conspirators were, but we are very certain that Michelle Zajko was in the home and arranged for the death of her parents," Rouse said Wednesday. "If she wasn't the one who actually pulled the trigger, she was certainly aligned with those who did."

Zajko has documented connections to the Zizians, described by NBC as "a cultlike group of highly educated, AI-obsessed vegans" that has surfaced in several violent incidents nationwide. Federal officials previously identified her as the supplier of guns used in a deadly 2024 Vermont Border Patrol shootout involving two other alleged Zizian adherents. Zajko and alleged group leader Jack "Ziz" LaSota vanished for years before being arrested in Maryland in 2025 on unrelated charges. Zajko, long a person of interest in the killing of her parents, has been in custody since her arrest last year. The new charges against her include murder, burglary, and conspiracy charges.
