President Trump has a new way he'd like Americans to stamp their travels: with his face. On Friday, the president shared a fresh mock-up of a special US passport meant to mark the country's 250th anniversary, posting an image on Truth Social and dubbing it "The USA's New Passport, which says, 'Welcome, but be good!'" The sample page shows Trump hovering over the Resolute Desk with the Declaration of Independence text as a backdrop, his signature below, and John Trumbull's famous "The Declaration of Independence" painting opposite, per CNN.

The rendering appears to be based on Trump's National Portrait Gallery painting and differs from an earlier State Department concept that used a different Trump image. The White House later pushed the same design on X and referred questions about its official status to the State Department, which hasn't yet commented. Announced in April to some backlash, the limited-edition design is set to become the default for in-person renewals at the Washington Passport Agency once available; other locations and online renewals will keep the standard look.

The Daily Beast has one niggling point with the new document: The phrase "Welcome, but be good!" seems to be directed at foreigners entering the United States, but, as the outlet notes, "a US passport is issued to American citizens for international travel ... It is not used to admit foreign visitors to the country." "Ummmm ... US passports are used by US citizens traveling abroad. Welcome to what?" White House reporter SV Date wrote online.
