A massive sea search off Southern California has shifted into a recovery mission for a missing US Marine. Lance Cpl. Armando Ortiz Canseco went missing early Thursday from the USS Anchorage while on a training exercise, reports NBC San Diego. Crews from the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force have scoured roughly 2,400 square miles and say it's now seen as a search-and-recovery operation rather than search-and-rescue, per USA Today.
Officials have released few details about how the Marine disappeared. Family and friends in Ortiz Canseco's hometown of Richfield, Minnesota, held a vigil for him at a local church on Sunday. The case follows another recent loss of US personnel overseas: Two Army soldiers who went missing during a May training exercise in Morocco were found dead more than a week later after what officials described as an off-duty hiking fall.
